Start With the Jewelry You Already Have
The first step is not choosing a new setting from a catalog. It is understanding what you have. We examine the existing jewelry, identify the stones and metals, check the condition of the gemstones, and discuss which parts have sentimental importance. Sometimes the goal is to preserve a center stone exactly as it is. In other projects, several family pieces are combined into one new design.
Can the Original Gold Be Reused?
Sometimes, but not always—and reusing the exact metal is not automatically the best choice. Old jewelry may contain solder, previous repairs, mixed alloys or other materials that can make direct reuse unpredictable. Depending on the project, we may recommend using fresh metal for the new piece while applying the value of usable old precious metal toward the project. When direct reuse makes sense technically and aesthetically, we can discuss that option during the design process.
Design Around the Stones, Not the Old Setting
One of the advantages of a true custom redesign is that the old mounting does not have to dictate the new look. We can design around the actual dimensions, proportions and character of your stones. That may mean creating a clean modern ring, changing the orientation of a stone, combining several diamonds into a new composition, or building an entirely different piece around one meaningful gemstone.
What Happens During a Jewelry Redesign?
Our process begins with a consultation. We look at the jewelry together and talk about what you want to keep, what you want to change, how you wear jewelry, and the overall direction you have in mind. From there, we develop the design and determine the appropriate construction method for the piece. Depending on the project, that can involve CAD, hand fabrication, casting, stone setting and other bench-jewelry techniques performed as part of the custom process.
Because every inherited piece is different, we do not treat redesigns as a one-size-fits-all service. Stone condition, metal, scale, complexity and the amount of fabrication required all affect what is possible and what the project will cost.
Can an Old Diamond Look Completely Different?
Absolutely. A diamond or gemstone can take on a very different personality when the proportions, metal color, setting style and surrounding stones change. A traditional inherited diamond can become part of a minimal bezel ring, a contemporary engagement ring, a bold cocktail ring or a design that bears little resemblance to the original mounting.
What If I Have Several Pieces of Family Jewelry?
Bring them. A redesign does not have to begin with a single ring. We can evaluate multiple pieces and explore whether their stones—or, when appropriate, their precious-metal value—can contribute to one new piece. This is often a meaningful way to combine jewelry inherited from different family members without simply storing the original pieces away.
Should Inherited Jewelry Be Appraised Before Redesigning It?
If you need to document the jewelry's current identity, characteristics or value for insurance, estate or personal records, it can make sense to have that documentation completed before the original piece is altered. Once a ring is disassembled or redesigned, it is no longer the same item. We can discuss the appropriate sequence before beginning work.
